Myrto Legaki Talks About Stress

In the eighth episode of JennyGr’s VOX series with Jenny Balatsinou, Myrto Legaki, Leadership and Corporate Wellbeing Consultant, joins the conversation to talk about stress — what causes it, how it affects us, and how we can manage it.

Stress is not the enemy
Myrto Legaki highlights that stress, in itself, is not something negative. On the contrary, it’s a natural and necessary defense mechanism of our body in response to potential threats. The real issue arises when our nervous system cannot distinguish a real threat to our survival, such as an immediate danger, from everyday pressures or unmet expectations.

How stress shows up in the body
Recognizing the early signs of stress is essential. Although these may vary from person to person, they often include physical and psychological responses triggered by the release of cortisol and adrenaline, the main stress hormones. These responses activate the "Fight, Flight, or Freeze" mechanism and may manifest as digestive issues, increased blood pressure, or rapid heartbeat.

Changing our relationship with stress
As Myrto explains, the goal is not to eliminate stress, but to build a different relationship with it. Staying in regular contact with our body, noticing its signals, and understanding the physiological responses can help us manage stress with more awareness and resilience.
