Resilience, Focus & Sustainable Performance for Google

The context

Google invited One Breath to deliver a workshop for managers focused on resilience, stress management, focus and sustainable performance. The session was designed to support managers in navigating demanding, fast-moving environments while maintaining clarity, energy and effectiveness. Participants explored the relationship between stress, attention and performance, while learning practical ways to manage pressure more skillfully and work with greater focus.

The workshop combined insights from neuroscience, psychology and mindfulness with experiential exercises and practical tools that could be applied immediately in everyday leadership.

The challenge

Managers are often required to move rapidly between strategic priorities, meetings, decisions, communication and people-related demands. Maintaining focus and energy across these competing demands requires both awareness and practical self-management skills.

The workshop focused on strengthening four core capabilities:

  • Recognizing and regulating stress

  • Protecting attention and focus

  • Managing energy more deliberately

  • Sustaining performance through effective recovery

The aim was to make these capabilities practical, relevant and easy to integrate into everyday leadership.

The methodology

The One Breath methodology combines evidence-based insight with experiential learning and practical application. Rather than focusing only on theory, the session invited participants to explore their own patterns, experiment with simple techniques and consider how small shifts in behavior could improve the way they work and lead. The workshop was structured around four key areas.

1. Understanding stress and the nervous system

Participants explored how the stress response can influence cognition, behavior and emotional regulation, particularly during demanding moments.

Key areas included:

  • Recognizing early signs of physiological and mental stress

  • Understanding how increased activation can influence decision-making and communication

  • Identifying personal triggers and habitual responses

  • Creating more space to respond thoughtfully under pressure

This gave participants a practical way to understand their own stress patterns and consider how greater self-regulation can support stronger leadership presence.

2. Managing attention and focus

The workshop also explored attention as one of our most valuable cognitive resources.

Participants examined how interruptions, task switching and continuous digital input can fragment concentration and increase mental fatigue. They then considered practical ways to work with greater intentionality such as:

  • Reducing unnecessary fragmentation of attention

  • Protecting periods of focused work

  • Distinguishing between tasks that require deeper concentration and those that can be managed more reactively

  • Becoming more deliberate about where attention is directed throughout the day

The emphasis was on realistic changes that could strengthen focus while still allowing managers to remain responsive and connected to their teams.

3. Building resilience through recovery and energy management

A key part of the session focused on how managers can sustain performance over time by managing energy as carefully as they manage time. Participants explored how cognitive and emotional energy fluctuate across the working day and how brief moments of recovery can help restore focus and reduce accumulated stress, such as:

  • Creating short recovery moments between demanding activities

  • Recognizing when mental or emotional resources are becoming depleted

  • Matching energy to the type of work being performed

  • Using brief regulation techniques to reset during the day

This helped participants see recovery as an active part of high performance and as something that can be built into the working day in small, practical ways.

4. Applying mindfulness to leadership performance

Mindfulness practices were integrated throughout the workshop as practical tools for strengthening attention and self-regulation. Participants experienced short exercises designed to support:

  • Greater awareness of their internal state

  • Improved concentration

  • Faster recovery after demanding situations

  • Increased clarity before important conversations or decisions

  • A greater ability to pause before responding automatically

The practices were intentionally short and accessible, making them easy to use before a meeting, after a difficult interaction or during a particularly demanding day. Reflection and discussion were woven throughout the session, allowing participants to connect the material to their own leadership context and identify the practices that could make the greatest difference in their daily work.

The impact

The workshop gave Google managers a practical framework for understanding how stress, attention, energy and recovery interact to influence performance. Participants left with techniques they could integrate into their working day to:

  • Recognize stress signals earlier

  • Regulate their responses during demanding situations

  • Protect attention and improve focus

  • Manage energy more intentionally

  • Create brief opportunities for recovery throughout the day

  • Use mindfulness techniques to regain clarity and concentration

  • Respond to pressure with greater awareness and intention

The session also highlighted the connection between personal resilience and leadership effectiveness. The way a manager handles pressure can influence the quality of their decisions, conversations, relationships and overall leadership presence.

The collaboration with Google reflects One Breath's approach to leadership development: bringing together research, experiential learning and simple, practical tools that leaders can use in real working environments.

By helping managers understand their own responses to pressure and develop more intentional ways of managing attention and energy, the workshop supported a more sustainable approach to focus, resilience and high performance.
